This Seminar will be held at the Pittsburgh Baptist Church:

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. explain the dynamics of domestic abuse, the types of abuse, and the cycle of abuse.

  2. recognize the characteristics and mindset of an abuser.

  3. identify the profile of a victim, and explain the reasons why she stays, and assess the impact the abuse has on the victim.

  4. give examples of the impact of abuse on children and teenagers.

  5. discuss the importance of empathy and support.

  6. justify the importance of confidentiality.

  7. practice how to counsel wisely and what questions to ask.

Upon completion of this seminar participants will be equipped with information about the mindset of the abuser, the response of the victim because of the abuse, and the cycle that they are entangled in. The importance of confidentiality when talking with victims will also be stressed. In addition, participants will be able to give examples of the impact of the abuse and the importance of support. Participants will identify what questions to ask to counsel with wisdom and compassion.

About the Speaker:

Doreen Weiss, a Licensed Professional Counselor at the Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute, obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Community Ministries from Geneva College and her Master’s degree in Community Counseling from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Doreen is the founder of Enduring Hope Christ Centered Counseling, a non-profit ministry for women who are spiritually, emotionally and/or physically at risk. Doreen is also a discipleship leader and teacher providing outreach to the local community. She is a domestic violence educator providing training and workshops on domestic violence and abuse including tools for individuals, churches, and support groups. She has been counseling women suffering from domestic violence and relationship issues for over fifteen years. Doreen uses a biblical counseling approach and is certified in: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Addiction and Recovery, and Genesis Process. Doreen has specific training in trauma resolution and post-traumatic stress disorder. She is experienced in, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, crisis counseling, and victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

The Pittsburgh Baptist Church is located at 3100 Pioneer Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15226. There is a parking lot if you are driving and the nearest bus stop is "West Liberty Ave Opp Pioneer Ave FS" located here. The building is accessible.
